There are two options for you. Please click on the appropriate box below.

Option 1: Mifepristone and Misoprostol

Step 1:   Swallow one pill of mifepristone (200 mg). You may see light bleeding after you take mifepristone. This is normal but you will need to follow all steps whether you experience bleeding or not.

Step 2: Wait 24-48 hours

You should wait 24 hours before using the misoprostol, but wait no longer than 48 hours. While you wait, just do the things you normally do in your everyday life, like taking care of your family or going to work or school.

Step 3: Use misoprostol (4 pills, 200 mcg each)

There are two ways to use misoprostol: putting the pills in your vagina or in your mouth between your cheeks and bottom jaws or gums. Both ways are very effective:

vaginaIf putting misoprostol in your vagina:

  1. Urinate and wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Lie down. Using your finger, push the 4 pills in your vagina. The pills do not have to be in any special place in the vagina, just as high up as your finger can easily reach.
  3. Lie down for 30 minutes.

mouthIf putting misoprostol in your mouth:

  1. Swallow a drink of water to make your mouth moist. Put the 4 pills between your cheek and bottom teeth or gums (2 pills on each side).
  2. Hold them in your cheeks for 30 minutes. They may make your mouth dry or taste chalky as they dissolve. Do not eat or drink for these 30 minutes.
  3. After 30 minutes, with water, rinse your mouth and drink down everything that is left of the pills.

What’s next?

Usually within 1 to 2 hours, you will start cramping and bleeding. You can drink and eat as you like but should plan to stay in a comfortable, private place until you feel better. Most women feel better in less than 24 hours. You can take ibuprofen to help manage the pain.

For more information, see “Side Effects” page.

Step 4:

If you used the abortion pills mifepristone and misoprostol, you probably do not need to visit a healthcare provider for a follow-up visit. Make sure you do not feel pregnancy symptoms, you feel in good health and your bleeding isn’t heavy.   These medicines are so effective that the World Health Organization recommends that you need to have a follow-up only if:

  • You feel sick or if your pain is not getting better after two or three days. If this occurs, seek medical attention right away.
  • You are still feeling pregnancy symptoms two weeks after taking the abortion pills.
  • Your bleeding is heavy and not getting lighter after two weeks.

Note: Two weeks after your abortion, a pregnancy test will still be positive due to lingering hormones in your body. If you continue to feel pregnancy symptoms (have breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue, etc.) after using the pills, visit a doctor.

Option 2: Misoprostol Alone

These instructions assume that you use 12 misoprostol pills that are 200 mcg each. There are two ways to use misoprostol: putting the pills in your vagina or in your mouth between your cheeks and bottom jaws or gums.   Both ways are very effective.

Step 1a: Use the first 4 pills.

vagina If you choose to insert them in your vagina, first be sure to urinate and wash your hands with soap and water. Lie down and use a finger to push 4 pills up into your vagina. The pills do not have to be in any special place in the vagina, just as high up as your finger can easily reach. Lie down for the next 30 minutes.

mouth
If you choose to put the pills in your mouth, place them between your cheek and your bottom teeth or gums and hold them there for 30 minutes (2 on each side). The pills may make your mouth dry, or taste chalky as they dissolve. Do not eat or drink in these 30 minutes. After time is up, rinse your mouth and swallow what is left of the pills with a sip of water.

1b: Wait 3-4 hours before following step 2.

Step 2a: Using 4 more pills, repeat step 1. If you choose to insert the pills in your vagina, lie down for 30 minutes, or if you hold them in your mouth, keep them between your cheeks and bottom teeth, and hold them there for 30 minutes before swallowing with water.

2b: Wait 3-4 hours before following step 3.

Step 3: Using the final set of 4 pills, repeat step 1. If you choose to insert the pills in your vagina, lie down for 30 minutes. If you choose to put the pills in your mouth, be sure to hold them in your cheeks by your bottom teeth or gums for 30 minutes before rinsing and swallowing with water.

What’s next?

Usually within 1 to 2 hours of the first set of pills being absorbed into your body, you will start cramping and bleeding. These cramps may be stronger than during a normal period. You can drink and eat as you like but should plan to stay in a comfortable, private place until you feel better. Most women feel better in less than 24 hours. You can take ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain medicine to help manage the pain.

For more information, see “Side effects” page.

Step 4: Visit your health provider

If you used only misoprostol, it’s best if a midwife, nurse or doctor can check you about 2-3 weeks after taking the pills. By performing a pelvic exam, they will be able to tell if you´re still pregnant. If you don’t want to have a pelvic exam, you can request an ultrasound (if available). We encourage you to tell your health provider that you have used the abortion pill if you can. If you feel it is unsafe to share this, or if abortion is restricted where you are, you can tell them you thought you were pregnant and then had bleeding or you can say you have had bleeding that looks a bit different from your normal period.

You must visit your health provider if you feel:

  • Sick or if your pain is not getting better after two or three days. If this occurs, seek medical attention right away.
  • Bleeding is heavy and not getting lighter after 2 weeks
  • You are still experiencing pregnancy symptoms 2 weeks after taking the abortion pills

Note: Two weeks after your abortion, a pregnancy test will still be positive due to lingering hormones in your body. If you feel pregnancy symptoms (have breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue, etc.) visit a doctor.
