Who We Are & Extent Of This Policy:

HowToUseAbortionPill (the Organization or We) is a non-profit organization that provides a digital system with a website and related technologies to connect people globally to accurate and tailored information on safe abortion with pills, enabling them to have a safe abortion on their own terms (the System). The System gathers personally identifiable information (PII) about its users, including the Organization’s staff, freelancers, and job applicants (Users). This Privacy Policy details the types of PII we collect and Users’ rights concerning their PII. While we control many aspects of the System, certain elements are provided by External Service Providers to enhance its effectiveness.

This Privacy Policy was established to safeguard Users’ privacy.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY & ADDITIONAL PRIVACY NOTICES

We maintain the right to modify this Privacy Policy in the future. We won’t inform users of minor changes that don’t significantly impact their privacy – such as providing improved privacy protection, fixing typographical errors, or adding supplementary information. For any substantial change, we will inform Users via email. Without a valid email address from a User, we cannot notify them of any Policy changes. This Privacy Policy might be updated or supplemented by us through new versions or additional privacy notices relevant to specific interactions with us. These notices may be either embedded in this Policy, posted on the Organization’s website, and/or made available to you separately.

LINKS TO THIRD-PARTY SITES

This Privacy Policy does not extend to third-party sites that might link to or be accessible from the System. We are not liable for the content, features, functionality, or privacy practices of such linked sites or services. The data collection and usage of any linked third-party site are governed by that entity’s privacy notice, statement, or policy. We encourage you to read them.

COLLECTED PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION:

In this Privacy Policy, all personally identifiable information is collectively termed as “PII.” We gather a wide range of PII from and about Users, depending on the User and context. Hence, PII may encompass:

  • Name.
  • Email address.
  • Phone number.
  • IP address, internet service provider, browser type, and language.
  • Location.
  • Time Zone.
  • Languages used.
  • Age, gender, personal photos, and other personal information Users provide.
  • Information Users provide regarding their health, reproductive/pregnancy issues, reasons for interacting with the System, and their abilities to access and pay for reproductive healthcare services.
  • Employment status and employer information.
  • Testimonials and ratings given to any aspect of the System.

COLLECTING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION:

We seek consent before collecting PII. By interacting with the System, Users consent to both (1) the terms of this Privacy Policy and (2) to our collection, use, and retention of information they provide and that the System collects from their technology use.

In other words, anytime a User interacts with the System, it can automatically collect PII from the technology the User is using and will collect any PII that the User provides during any such interaction with the System.

Methods for Personal Information Collection:

  • Voluntary contributions by the Users;
  • Users’ interactions with the System, including Third party/External Service Providers.
  • Conversations with Users.

We continually seek efficient, secure methods for PII collection, and will update this Privacy Policy to reflect new methods.

HOW WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION:

We use the PII we collect and/or possess in the following ways:

  • To interact with you as a User including but not limited to providing you relevant, helpful information relating to your reproductive options.
  • Analyze any PII so we can improve the services, products, and value we deliver and/or communicate such improvements and related information to Users and others.
  • Perform administrative functions for the System and/or in the normal course of employment and operations of the Organization.
Conduct research for and/or by the Organization.
  • For some eLearning courses we provide in collaboration with other organizations, we provide the other organizations some PII we collect about their members who participate in such eLearning courses.
  • Fundraising efforts, which can include providing summaries of PII to entities that offer or might offer funding to the Organization.
  • Provide PII to law enforcement, other government agencies or authorities, or third parties as required by applicable law, court order, subpoena, or legal process served on the Organization.

We will take reasonable and lawful steps to avoid being forced to disclose your PII by any governmental entity or third-party that seeks access to it. However, there are instances where government entities and/or third-parties have the legal right to compel entities like our Organization to disclose PII; and, in these situations, our Organization will have to comply.

As to PII collected and/or stored by Third-Party Service Providers participating in the System, we do not control their use and/or storage of any such PII.

As explained in the section of this Privacy Policy titled “YOUR RIGHTS OVER YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION”, you can influence what we do with your PII as defined in that section.

YOUR RIGHTS OVER YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION:

Users’ rights regarding their PII include:

  • Accessing and receiving copies of their PII.
  • Understanding how their PII has been obtained and used.
  • Correcting or deleting their PII.
  • Modifying how we use their PII.

To exercise any of these rights, Users must provide us a valid, verifiable email address and follow the instructions set forth below in the section of this Privacy Policy titled “HOW TO CONTACT US WITH REQUESTS, COMMENTS, AND QUESTIONS”. If a User does not provide us a valid, verifiable email address, we cannot contact them; and this prevents (1) us from notifying them about changes to this policy and/or issues relating to their PII (2) and us from verifying their identify so that we can allow them to exercise their rights to access, correct, control and delete their PII.

THE ORGANIZATION’S MINOR’S PRIVACY POLICY AND PRACTICES:

We don’t intentionally collect data from individuals under 13. Since our System is not aimed at minors, we don’t verify users’ ages using our website and services. This means that we might unintentionally and inadvertently collect some PII of a minor who uses the System. To the extent that Users provide the PII about people under the age of 13, the Organization shall treat such PII according to this Privacy Policy. If we knowingly interact with a person under the age of 13, we instruct the person that they need a parent’s consent to interact with the System.

DATA SECURITY AND RETENTION POLICIES AND PRACTICES:

To safeguard your PII, we take the following measures:

  • Education about this Policy: We actively educate our staff, associates, and Third-party Service Providers about the details of this Privacy Policy, emphasizing the critical role they play in preventing unauthorized access or use of PII in their care.
  • Security enhancements: Our ongoing commitment to enhancing PII security is reflected in our current efforts. We have already put in place several security protocols aimed at thwarting unauthorized PII access or misuse. Upon finalizing our security upgrade initiatives, we will provide an updated overview of these measures in this Privacy Policy. Feel free to reach out to us for any clarifications.
  • Data retention policy: Ordinarily, our practice is to delete all PII a year after its acquisition. Nonetheless, given the intricacies of our System, this timeline isn’t always achievable. It’s important to note that this retention policy does not extend to PII gathered or stored by Third-Party Service Providers.
  • Data encryption policy: Acknowledging the criticality of encrypting collected PII, we are actively modifying our System to ensure complete encryption of PII at rest. Presently, this process is not fully implemented across all PII. Moreover, this encryption strategy does not encompass PII in the custody of Third-Party Service Providers.
  • Third-Party Service Providers: As to Third-Party Service Providers, we haven’t conducted independent verifications of their claimed security measures. Such an independent assessment is too expensive and time-consuming for an entity like our Organization; and most third-party service providers will not allow these assessments to be done.

“DO NOT TRACK” DISCLOSURE:

We do not track people across third-party websites to provide targeted advertising. Therefore, we do not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) signals.

HOW TO CONTACT US WITH REQUESTS, COMMENTS, AND QUESTIONS:

For requests, comments, or questions, email us at info@howtouseabortionpill.org. We verify identities using the on-file email before discussing PII.

As stated above, if a User does not provide us a valid, verifiable email address when originally interacting with us and providing us PII, we cannot subsequently verify their identity; and this prevents us from allowing anyone from exercising any rights relating to PII in our possession.

LAST UPDATE:

This Privacy Policy was updated on February 14, 2024. We will update this Privacy Policy at least once every 12 months.
